After a good workout—whether it’s intense cardio, weight lifting, or the subtle-but-powerful balance of a stabilizing yoga routine—your body craves sustenance. Exhausted, you have an hour-window to replenish all of the nutrients you’ve used while exercising. One quick way to do this is to blend together a fresh smoothie. Nutritional powerhouses, smoothies made from natural ingredients do a number of things for you: they temper cravings, hydrate, and they work as a sort of express lane for important nutrients to reach your bloodstream. They are cool, refreshing, and tend to be just the thing you need to finish off a rigorous training session.

Typically, people add green vegetables to their smoothies for that extra punch of fiber, iron and antioxidants. Spinach and Romaine have always been favorites among those who are looking to create healthy after-workout drinks. There is, however, a healthy “green” that is often overlooked.

By incorporating California Endive into your favorite smoothie recipe, you’ll detoxify your body, strengthen your immune system, and balance your digestive system. A natural diuretic and laxative, Endive promotes intestinal regularity and can even dissolve kidney stones.

In the following recipe, Endive’s naturally bitter taste blends well with the sweet peach, mango and coconut water, offering a complex, earthy balance to this delicious, healthy smoothie.

1 mango, peeled and pit removed

1 peach, peeled and pit removed

Juice of ¼ a lemon

1 – 2 heads of endive

1 handful spinach

1 cup water or coconut water (as needed for blending)

Blend water and fruit until smooth.  Add greens a handful at a time until smooth.
